January, what a month! I hope everyone enjoyed the snow days. Mother Nature certainly provided a connection to our thematic literary units. The children enjoyed our stories Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner and The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Neitzel. They were very quick to pick up the rhymes and complete sentences. We are excited to observe the growth in their pre-literacy skills. I encourage you to read to your child, every day.

Cooking in the Classroom
Each week we will cook something that is connected to our thematic unit. Cooking benefits preschoolers in many ways.
- Build basic skills. Math skills can be strengthened by simply counting eggs or pouring water into a measuring cup. When you read a recipe together, you're introducing new words to your child's vocabulary and promoting literacy. Following steps in the recipe can work on listening skills.
- Encourage an adventurous palate. Preschoolers are notoriously picky eaters. Our little chefs may be more likely to try a new food they have made.
- Explore with their senses. Preschoolers learn by exploring with their senses. Listening to the whir of the mixer, pounding dough, smelling it warm from the oven, and tasting warm bread.
- Boosting confidence. Preschoolers love to show what they can do. Working in the kitchen provides opportunities to gain a sense of accomplishment.
